3 Dog Friendly Hikes in Bitterroot Valley, Montana

For the dog lovers like me, bringing your furry friend along for adventures is a must. Three dog friendly hikes in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana that I recommend are Blodgett Overlook, Bear Creek and Larry Creek.

Blodgett Overlook Trail in Hamilton, Montana

Blodgett Overlook is easily one of my favorite hikes in the Bitterroot Valley. The hike is on the shorter side at 2.6 miles, with stunning views. You’ll get the true experience of hiking in the Rocky Mountains. Ascending the trail you’ll overlook panoramic views of the Bitterroot Valley, mountain peaks and a plethora of pine trees. If you’re lucky enough to visit in the late spring/early summer, you may encounter vibrant wildflowers.

This is a popular trail. While the parking lot is small and can get crowded, you do have space from others while out on the trail. In the parking lot, you’ll find a vault toilet and two trailheads. To visit the Overlook, you’ll need to stay to the right.

My dog absolutely loves this trail. Her favorite part is dunking in the creek just off of the parking lot after finishing the hike.

Bear Creek Trail in Victor, Montana

Bear Creek trail in Victor, Montana isn’t nearly as trafficked as the Blodgett Overlook Trail. It’s just under 6 miles and covers varied terrain. In spots you’ll trek through rocks (watch those steps), and others crossing small creek crossings and forested landscapes. This trail is worth the visit, not for the view at the end, but those along the way. In my opinion, it’s a bit anticlimactic getting the the end of the trail. You end up by a small opening with creek access. However, throughout the trail there are spurs to be taken for gorgeous creek views. You’ll know where these are from the beaten paths and loud rush of the water nearby. Part way through the hike there is an expansive view of the creek that would be perfect for a picnic!

Be aware that the trail could be a bit overgrown. When I hiked, I encountered overgrown branches in the trail. It may be muddy as well since there are small creek crossing the require you to hop across rocks.

Larry Creek Trail in Stevensville, Montana

Larry Creek is a popular trail system for hikers, horseback riding, and biking. When hiking here, you don’t need to follow a specific path to complete it. Various paths connect allowing you to create your desired hike. The terrain on this trail is much more even than the others mentioned. It’s a forested trail beneath the pine trees. On a warm day, you’ll smell the sweet smell of the trees. Depending on when you visit, you may see wildflowers.
